At the beginning of Lent, we heard about some of the needs of our parishes which we hope to address through the parish share (once we meet our goal) in the annual Diocesan Lenten Appeal. Our projects at both churches can be summed up in one word: drainage.
At St. Mary’s, the drain along Coolidge Street at St. Mary’s is in need of repair. The small, warped, individual panels often fall in when cars drive over them, creating both a hazard as well as a daily project and nuisance of straightening them. The concrete work is also in disrepair.
At St. John’s we have a major drainage project which must be completed, as evidenced by last year’s flooding. Some of the old, narrow terracotta pipe is crushed, just as the driveway behind the social hall is crumbling. Additionally, the efflorescence that was on the interior of the social hall indicated that there is too much water near the walls of the church, and possible drainage issues with the French drains around the church. To remedy these concerns, a new, larger, drainage pipe (approximately 500 feet) needs to be installed to carry away all of the water from the church including roof drains, catch basins, and the French drains. Additionally, the defunct yet improperly drained septic system also needs sealed off and removed.
With your help, we hope to reach our DLA goal and begin to raise funds to address these issues at both parishes.
